Trick or Treat

The kids first trick or treating was a questionable success. That depends on the way in which you measure success when having a two year old, I think. If trick or treating success to you means the lightbulb moment when watching a two year olds face who realizes that in order to get candy, all they have to do is speak three simple words, then well, we had success folks. It was a bit of a rocky start with our first encounter, considering for the past 2.5 years I have been drilling into Haden's tiny brain to say please whenever he wanted anything. He was very displeased to hear that he would have to learn a whole new way of asking for something on this one particular night, but once he discovered the possibilities he was quick to give in.
I think perhaps the hardest thing in having a two year old is the knowledge barrier. It's hard to communicate brand new circumstances to a toddler, let alone expecting them to just suddenly embrace it.
All that to say, Haden did warm up to the idea and we did have a good night. Especially when he called every elderly woman who answered the door Grandma. His confidence soared with each new house as he began to try and sneak more and more pieces of candy at each new place. Thank goodness we stopped after 5 houses. I'm certain at some point the entire candy bowl would have been cleared.
One thing is for certain, thank goodness he has the memory of a two year old and I don't have to deal with whining over candy this year. You bet your bottom dollar that candy is in a good and safe hiding spot, only to emerge in times of bribery desperation or as potty training rewards. Keep tuned for a humorous post on that someday soon (please let it be soon!).
